Apple’s Jobs jokes about rumors about his health

Steve Jobs isn’t dead yet, despite the constant rumor mill on his “deteriorating” health. Even though there’s no real evidence to point to that. This is what happens when a company is too reliant on a single individual and not an array of products.

“Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs joked about the speculation on his health Tuesday, kicking off an Apple event by flashing a message on a screen that ‘The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.’” - Breitbart.com September 9th, 2008 Article

Google From Internet Underdog to Internet Giant

Google, who is celebrating their tenth anniversary this week, has come a long way from being a cool little project in the garage of two college students. Back then they were all about being a small internet operation. Now they’re one of the biggest companies on the web and are even taking on Microsoft (the giant that everyone loves to hate) in a new browser war.

In the company’s early days, its chief executive, Eric Schmidt, said Google would not need its own browser. He added that there was no plan to take on Microsoft with online versions of applications because they did not provide as good an experience as desktop software. But all that changed two years ago when Google released a succession of online applications to rival Microsoft’s – culminating in last week’s launch of Chrome.

Brighthand Reviews BlackBerry Curve 8330

Brighthand.com has done a review of the new BlackBerry Curve 8330. The primary thing that the new 8330 has going for it is ease of use as a business device and a very compact design.

Here’s an excerpt from Brighthand’s review:

“the Curve is all about getting information to you from one point to another. The GPS integration is the best demonstration of this; the email is the best integration of this. Whether it is enough to move you from a current mobile to the Curve really depends on your needs and budget. But you can be assured that what the Curve lacks in iPhone-like flash, it makes up for easily in its ability to be enjoyable enough to get the job done.”

iPhone 3G Makes $330 Million in one Weekend

MobilityToday.com has some of the estimated numbers of the first weekend that the new Apple iPhone 3G was on sale. One interesting part of the statistics is that more people bought the larger, more expensive 16GB model rather than the smaller, cheaper 8GB model. Not just a small difference, but a 2 to 1 difference.

My guess for this difference is that unlike the iPod music players, iPhone customers are signing up for a two year contract with AT&T to get what is a pretty good price on their new iPhone. So they are more willing to go ahead and spend the extra $100 for double the memory.

Here are the numbers from the original article:

  • At least 1 million iPhones sold over the first weekend (Apple)
  • Cost to Apple: $174.33 parts plus $50 royalties for 8GB model; $16 more for 16GB model (iSuppli)
  • Cost to consumers: $199 (8GB), $299 (16GB) (Apple)
  • Cost to carriers: conservatively, $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB) (iSuppli)
  • Profit per phone: $274.67 (8GB) and $358.67 (16GB)
  • Models sold: 33% (8GB), 66% (16GB) (Piper Jaffray survey)

Apple iPhone 3G Not Impressing Exchange Users

It appears that the design of the new Apple iPhone 3G isnt doing enough to impress exchange users. David Ciccone over at MobilityToday has a few things to gripe about with the new iPhone’s exchange support.

But at the same time, he said he’s willing to put up with the bugs but really misses the exchange support that Windows Mobile gave hime. Here’s an excerpt:

“…I am liking this phone so much that I am willing to deal with the above bugs. Do I miss Windows Mobile exchange support? You better believe ya! Apple completely failed here and they should be embarrassed to tell their enterprise customers this is a full featured email device. Its not there yet Apple..”

The much anticipated Apple iPhone 3G is appartently have trouble worldwide. New customers are unable to complete the in-store activation process because of a glitch with the Apple iTunes synchronization process.

Here’s a quote from the ABC News website article:

“‘There seem to be worldwide issues with this syncing process and Apple is working on it right now,’ AT&T Wireless spokesman Mark Siegel told ABCNews.com. ‘What we’re telling our customers in the stores is once we have activated their account, we’re urging them to go home and try syncing it later on iTunes. … Apple is working on this problem.’”
